BET networks aired their 2016 BET Honors last night (they were filmed on Mar 12th at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C.) and host Arsenio Hall pulled no punches in his opening monologue.
After acknowledging honorees L.A. Reid, Lee Daniels, Eric Holder, Patti LaBelle, and Melody Hobson, the actor and comic lamented that President Obama would be out of office by the time the next awards come around.
“When he was sworn into office he was The Dark Knight, now that he’s leaving office he’s 50 Shades of Gray,” he says of the toll eight years of running the country has taken on President Obama’s hair. But Arsenio added that POTUS seems ready to leave. “Have you noticed how Black he’s getting as we get close to the end? He’s getting blacker as the days progress… At the State of The Union speech he said, and I quote, ‘Greetings Americans, I’m here to inform you that come January 20th 2017 at noon, I’m out this bitch.’ He said that!”
Arsenio pivoted to poll the audience on the current Presidential candidates, stating that while Bernie Sanders loves Black people, Black folks love Hillary Clinton, to loud applause. “Hillary is like cocoa butter to Black people,” he joked before warning that if Donald Trump is elected that he’d take away everything Black.
“If Trump wins, gatherings like this will cease to exist. He gonna take away everything Black. No more BET, Patti. Trump gonna take away Black licorice. No more Tyrese, everything Black gonna be gone. He gonna build a wall around February. The Trump calendar is gonna go from January straight to March. On Instagram on #TBT there will be a picture of February.”
