UPDATE: Royce released the official video to “Tabernacle” today on BET Jams. In a full-circle moment Royce’s son plays his father in the video which chronicles his birth.
Royce 5’9″ has been silent on the solo front since 2011’s Success Is Certain, but Layers is coming on April 15 to bring Royce back on the scene. In our exclusive interview, 5’9″ described the process behind writing the introspective lead single “Tabernacle” (which just premiered today via Complex Music). The song, where he describes losing his granny, gaining his son, and meeting Eminem all in the same night, was a labor of love for the Detroit MC.
“I did the song four years ago, but it was the first song that I recorded when I got sober,” he revealed. “I didn’t come out the gate introspective in my career at all. I didn’t come out really letting people in at all. I came out trying to lyrically slice and dice MCs…once I got sober, all this personal stuff that crossed my mind just started pouring out.”
