Royce 5′ 9″ has been putting on his own version of March Madness leading up the release of his album Layers in April. After releasing the song and video to the emotional “Tabernacle,” Nickle announced that there would be a mixtape to precede the album called “Trust The Shooter.” The Nottz produced “Which Is Cool” got the video treatment from the set and the full clip is now available via Datpiff.com.
But the big reveal to us was confirmation that a new PRhyme album is on the way with DJ Premier chopping up the music of our man, Philadelphia composer Antman Wonder. The two collaborated on the “The Aura” from Skyzoo and Torae’s Barrel Brothers LP in 2014 and now we will get a full length teased by the brollic “Black History.” The first PRhyme album featured Royce and DJ Premier working with composer Adrian Younge.
Antman Wonder has released two instrumental LPs, 2012’s The Present and 2015’s Memories of The Fewture, which contain songs that both Antman and other producers have sampled for notable artists. Joey Bada$$’s “Curry Chicken,” Curren$y’s “Lemonade Mimosas” and Rick Ross’s “Crocodile Python” all feature Antman’s original compositions, just to name a few.
“Once I learned how to sample I learned that I could just play out the entire melody the way I want and then resample it as if I were hearing it as a sample,” he said in a 2014 interview. “In my mind things play out as a sample. Then I figure out how to compose it and rearrange it.”
“Trust The Shooter” features another Antman produced track, “Savages” as well as wet work from Mr. Porter, Jake One, Nottz, Streetrunner, Jhalil Beats and more.
If “Black History” is any indication, this next PRhyme is going to be another must-play.
