Last night’s MTV Movie Awards were full of surprises, especially an undercurrent of 80s rap music throughout. But the biggest surprise of the night came when Ryan Reynolds won Best Comedic Performance for his role in Deadpool: Duo Salt-N-Pepa showed up with their own phalanx of Deadpool dancers to present Reynolds with the golden popcorn.
Rap (particularly late 80s/early 90s rap) was everywhere at the awards last night. It played during transitions (ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” was a standout), Straight Outta Compton won the first ever True Story award (after being robbed at virtually every other award show), and The Lonely Island even did a tribute to Will Smith’s discography before he was presented with the Generation Award.
