Just five years ago, John Boyega was the star of an indie sci-fi action romp called Attack the Block, and now he’s the lead in what’s arguably the biggest franchise in the entire world, Star Wars. Today (June 6), he can add yet another big-screen adventure to his belt.
Variety reportst that Boyega’s been tapped to join the cast of Pacific Rim 2 – the sequel to director Guillermo del Toro’s 2013’s robot/monster extravaganza – as the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first movie. Plot details and other cast news is slim, but this is still yet another landmark stamp on Boyega’s cinematic passport.
And he’s not only starring in it, he’ll be co-producing with Femi Ognus under their production company Upper Room Productions. Boyega’s making moves.
The original film detailed the story of a world overrun by giant dinosaur-like monsters called kaiju fought off by human-piloted robots called jaegers. The mental strain of piloting a jaeger is so great that it requires two individuals to meld minds and control it together. Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, and Charlie Day, among others.
