Fonzworth Bentley Explains How Kanye West & Gucci Mane Made “Champions”

G.O.O.D. Fridays came back for the third(?) time last week when Kanye West premiered “Untitled” “Round & Round” “Champions” on Big Boy’s radio show. It’s a gargantuan posse cut featuring 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Desiigner, Quavo of Migos, along with Ye and Guwop. Even when you’re Kanye West, you need a plug to get at Gucci like that, and Fonzworth Bentley explained exactly how he went about grabbing the fresh-outta-prison Alabama rapper.

“We were at the studio and [Kanye] mentioned Gucci getting out…I really gave him the play-by-play of the significance of all the beats of what that looked like,” Bentley remembers. By the time he’d come back from putting his daughter to sleep, Kanye had already written Gucci into the song, so Bentley used his plug powers to make it so. “I sent one text message, industry insider, I got an incoming text immediately and before I knew it, I was on the phone with Gucci and I connected him to Ye and the rest is history.”

The two have worked together a few times in the past, most notably on “Everybody” with Andre 3000 and Shafiq Husayn and the Sa-Ra boys. It’s safe to say that musically and connection-wise, he’s a good guy to have around.
