Calling Hamilton a smash hit at this point would be an understatement. The show that pushes the story of treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton through a hip-hop filter is the hottest ticket on Broadway, with scalped tickets that’ll run you as much as a used sedan.
The show won a staggering 11 honors at the Tony Awards last night – including Best Musical and Best Actor for Clipping’s Daveed Diggs – off of 16 nominations, but it was Lin-Manuel Miranda who swept the audience with his heartfelt acceptance speech.
What started off as a tribute to his wife and daughter turned into a screed for love in all its forms, fueled by the fire of Saturday’s deadly shooting at an LGBTQ club in Orlando. “And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love/Cannot be killed or swept aside,” he said through tears. Peep the speech above.
