DJ Clark Kent & Wayne Williams Explain How Will Smith Made “Summertime”

The first official day of summer is finally here, though you might not guess it from the 80 degree days we’ve had recently. As such, it’s time for sunshine, friends, and lots of outdoor time, and music usually helps to enhance all of that. Two records in particular, Kool & The Gang’s “Summer Madness” and DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince’s “Summertime,” have become synonymous with the season and Kobie Brown dove behind the scenes to show how one birthed the other through chance.

Brown recruits everyone from Robert Kool Bell from Kool & The Gang to DJ Clark Kent to actor Deon Cole and DJ Wayne Williams to talk about how “Summer Madness” went from a big stepping record in Chicago to a song that Will Smith just had to rap over. “No one has ever made a more perfect summer record,” Clark Kent remembers of the classic record.
