As a comic book artist of color, Stephane Metayer had a dream: merge the worlds of hip-hop, manga, and anime in a way the world had never seen before. Last year, his project Tephlon Funk garnered enough fan interest to net over $22,000 on Kickstarter and bring it to life. The manga is heavily inspired by both anime and hip-hop (specifically Nas’ landmark Illmatic), which is easily gleaned from the tribute covers they’ve dropped:
Issue by issue, the story of Inez and her adventures through Queensbridge are coming out, but yesterday (June 27), Metayer decided to share a treat with fans in the form of a free 12-track beat tape by none other than Fat Jon.
Jon is best known as one of a handful of producers who worked on the music for Samurai Champloo, including Nujabes and FORCES OF NATURE. He’s kept a low profile since 2012’s Rapture Kontrolle, but he’s popped out from his German bunker to drop some new beats for those ears.
We can’t think of a better soundtrack to groove to, so give the tape a listen above and keep an eye out for Tephlon Funk!
