What was the world like 16 years ago? The internet was still coming into its own and it would still be one year before George W. Bush was sworn into office. Boosie was still Lil’, Ghostface had just dropped his solo debut Supreme Clientele, and an Australian group called The Avalanches dropped their kaleidoscopic debut album Since I Left You. I was only eight when this project dropped, but the group’s sample-heavy pop collage of an album found me and I haven’t let go since.
The project has gone through sea change after sea change since coming to life in 2005, starting as “ambient world music” according to former member Darren Seltmann before becoming almost entirely hip-hop-based and then settling on the 21 tracks that you can finally stream below.
Wildflower is up for stream exclusively on Apple Music for the next week (where else?) and features guest appearances from Camp Lo, Toro y Moi, Danny Brown, MF Doom, Biz Markie, Father John Misty, Paris Pershun of A.dD, and more. This joint was definitely worth the wait.
