Donald Trump’s wife Melania Trump helped to kick off the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland last night. While her speech helped to energize her base, the podium wasn’t cold before journalist Jarrett Hill pointed out the striking resemblances between portions of her speech and Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech to the DNC.
It wasn’t long before news outlets picked up on the story playing both speeches side-by-side to make the point:
In an interview with Matt Lauer earlier that day, Melania Trump said that she wrote her speech with “as little help as possible.” A Trump spokesman tried to explain Melania giving the FLOTUS’s speech the “Hotline Bling” treatment in a statement that neither confirms or denies the plagiarism:
“In writing her beautiful speech, Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking,” Miller said. “Melania’s immigrant experience and love for America shone through in her speech, which made it such a success.”
Regardless, voters and viewers on social media weren’t having it and dragged Trump’s Mrs with the #FamousMelaniaTrumpQuotes and #MelaniaTrumpQuotes hasthtags:
