Every Emotion We Felt After The Latest “Black Panther” Casting News

Black Panther Cast EW

San Diego Comic Con has been a treasure trove of film and TV related news, but nothing made us want to take off our sneakers and raise our fists in pride more than the latest updates around Marvel’s highly anticipated Black Panther film.

During the Marvel Comics panel, Director Ryan Coogler confirmed that “The Walking Dead” star Danai Gurira will be playing Okoye,  head of the Dora Milaje, Black Panther’s fierce security detail. Michael B Jordan will be shaking off the Fantastic Four blues by playing Black Panther’s adversary, Erik Killmonger. And Oscar Winner Lupita Ny’ongo is playing Nakia, another member of the Dora Milaje.

The film’s lead Chadwick Boseman tweeted a photo with the cast that sent social media into a frenzy:

The cultural impact of this film can’t be overstated, especially in these tense political times. Movie fans,  African-American ones in particular, have been campaigning hard for inclusion that is more than just lip service and tokenism. Hiring Creed director Coogler to direct was a strong first step, but the casting news has amplified expectations and signifies that Marvel is committed to making a blockbuster film.

The latest Black Panther casting news comes on the heels of the announcement that educator Roxanne Gay and poet Yona Harvey will be co-writing a Black Panther spinoff book called World Of Wakanda with Ta-Nehisi CoatesGay and Harvey will be the first black women to work as lead writers on an ongoing Marvel series in a publisher’s history.

Needless to say the news has given us all the feels… #BlackPantherSoLit
