Marvel has aggressively leaned into its recent embrace of hip-hop culture. This relationship has led to variant covers and songs mixed with semi-regular animated recaps for the Black Panther comic. Today (July 26), the comic book giant reveals that they’ve linked with Jean Grae and Quelle Chris for a song inspired by the third recap in their canon.
“What You Came For” is a thumping declaration of freedom pushed forth by Jean’s words and Chris’ production that couldn’t have come at a better time. “The amount of things recently that have made my heart soar are very minimal. It’s been a traumatic, gut-wrenching time,” Grae explained in an exclusive interview with Bandcamp. “Getting the call to be a part of this project did make my heart soar. Getting a call from Marvel to do anything should do that, and it does—but it’s Black Panther, and Ta-Nehisi is writing it. I can’t think of any other artistic contribution that I would have wanted to do right now.”
The third issue of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Panther series follow T’Challa (Black Panther) as he begins the fight against the superhuman terrorist organization known simply as The People. You can find the issue in stores now and the song above!
