Masta Ace Is Hip-Hop’s Dorian Gray In “Story Of Me” Video

Masta Ace’s The Falling Season is one of my favorite albums of 2016 and this song is a big reason why. “Story of Me” punctuates the semi-autobiographical narrative of Ace’s life as a teen in Brownsville, Brooklyn attending High School in Sheepshead Bay. For the video, which premiered on Okayplayer, Ace returns to his old stomping grounds of Brownsville and Coney Island where he shot the cover for his debut album Take A Look Around in 1990.

Masta Ace Take A Look Around

“This video is a journey back to my roots as an artist and as a person. I return to Brownsville, the neighborhood where I was raised and Coney Island, the exact location of the photo shoot from my debut album (which I hadn’t returned to since the original shoot in 1990). Alex and his team did a tremendous job showing Brownsville and CI in a way they have never been seen before. The beauty of the shots and my spiritual connection to the locations make this arguably the best video I have ever released.”

The song and video are impressive on their own but when you consider that Ace can still fit into his High School football jersey and is about to turn 50 in December you can do nothing but salute that man.

Ace released the video to “Young Black Intelligent” several weeks ago and decoded the song for our “Verse  Behavior” series.  Watch his performance and discussion below and the video to “Story Of Me” above.
