UPDATE (10/06/2016): Vince Staples himself has dropped some nuanced words about the mother reading lyrics to his song “Norf Norf.” After The Independent reached out to him and apparently misquoted him, he took to Twitter to fully explain himself. Outside of believing the woman misunderstood the song, Staples thinks we should use this opportunity to help Black and white people understand the context of each other’s communities. Read his thoughts below.
Vince Staples’ Summertime ’06 was an eye-opener for many when it dropped last year; a lurid trip through Long Beach, CA during a summer that changed Staples’ life forever. One of America’s new favorite pastimes is misunderstanding Vince Staples, like this mother seems hellbent to do.
The woman, whose name hasn’t been revealed, got wind of her daughter listening to Staples’ “Norf Norf” on Top 40 radio and apparently just couldn’t deal. “I couldn’t even believe the words that I was listening to. And as a mom, it infuriated me. Like why is this on here?,” she elaborated. “Like obviously the cuss words were bleeped out but I’m not stupid. Like we can dictate what they’re saying, right? Like I started to get tears in my eyes, it upset me so much. And my 11-year-old daughter listens to this radio station. Uh-uh, never again will she listen to this.”
What she said already proves that she hasn’t listened to many rap songs in her life, but she doesn’t stop there. After sobbing and collecting herself, she goes on to recite the entire song, n-words included. That combined with her lack of understanding of the song has left us with one of the most infuriating and hilarious videos you’ll see anywhere this year. Well, at least in the same ballpark as this chopped remix of her rhyming to Clams Casino’s beat.
Vince Staples just played a sold out show at Radio City Music Hall with James Blake last night, so I doubt he’s reeling from this critique. But we need to do our part and make sure people know where to find Google and Genius next time.
